Big Brothers Big Sisters Position Statement
United Way's Position on Non-discrimination

Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) affirmed a long-standing national policy that it does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, marital status, veteran status or disability when considering individuals for volunteer positions. In addition to this being a long-standing national policy, it has been a practice followed by the vast majority of BBBS agencies.

Based on a vote by its membership and approval by the Board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, non-discrimination is now a requirement for all BBBS agencies.

BBBS has received criticism from some groups who have focused on the sexual orientation portion of the non-discrimination policy. BBBS has an excellent, long-standing track record of providing safe and effective services for children and their families. The following facts should set the record straight:

  • For all but a handful of BBBS agencies, no change in policy or practice has occurred or is needed.
  • BBBS keeps children safe through its rigorous volunteer screening process - which sets the standard for the youth services sector - and through match supervision. Through these processes BBBS evaluates applicants as individuals and screens out individuals who would not be appropriate mentors.
  • Parental preference is honored. Parents may express preferences about the characteristics of their child's Big Brother or Big Sister - including sexual orientation - and these preferences are honored when the volunteer is selected.
